What Are The First and Second Deaths and the First and Second Resurrections?
2
The Problem
  • Many Christians teach that the “First Resurrection” will take place at the Feast of Trumpets when Jesus returns.
  • in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, in the last trumpet, for it shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we--we shall be changed (1 Corinthians 15:52 YLT)
3
Is This True?
  • But in the bible we read that:
  • Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
    (Revelation 20:6 KJVR)
  • So if the “First Resurrection” is only a flesh/grave resurrection as many believe then those “transformed in the twinkling of an eye” when Jesus returns aren’t “resurrected” and aren’t “blessed and holy” and by definition will be hurt of the “Second Death”
  • In other words – if Paul or Peter or Jesus brother James were alive when Jesus returns on the Feast of Trumpets they wouldn’t be blessed and holy. They would be penalized for being alive. But if they had been hit by a bus and died the day before they would be blessed and holy.
  • That doesn’t make sense.
4
One Key to Understanding the “First Ressurection” is understanding the “Second Death”
  • He who is having an ear--let him hear what the Spirit saith to the assemblies: He who is overcoming may not be injured of the second death. (Revelation 2:11 YLT)
  • Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6 KJVR)
  • and the death and the hades were cast to the lake of the fire--this is the second death; (Revelation 20:14 YLT)
5
What is the Second Death
  • Most Denominations Teach that this is the “Eternal Hell” where people are tortured forever.
  • The Bible is it’s own dictionary however.
  • We need to trust it instead of them.
  • The bible says the “lake of fire” is the second death.
6
Lake of Fire is the Second Death
So What’s the Lake of Fire Then?
  • We need to understand what “Fire” is in the bible. And Water too.
  • A lake contains water.
  • We also need to understand what the “First Death”, which is implied by a second death, is.
  • Also we need to understand what is an “over comer” because over these the second death has no authority.
  • The bible defines all it’s terms so we don’t have to gues.
7
The Bible Is It’s Own Dictionary – Abraham and Fire
  • (Genesis 15:17 YLT)  And it cometh to pass--the sun hath gone in, and thick darkness hath been--and lo, a furnace of smoke, and a lamp of fire, which hath passed over between those pieces.
  • The first mention of fire is God promising Abraham (through no part of his own) that all the world will be blessed through Abraham by faith.
  • So from the beginning fire and faith come together.
  • All Believers will be purified through fire.
  • The rule of “first use” links fire to God’s promise to Abraham, universal blessing, and God doing all the work.
8
Sodom and Gomorrah And Fire
  • and Jehovah hath rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Jehovah, from the heavens; and He overthroweth these cities, and all the circuit, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which is shooting up from the ground. And his wife looketh expectingly from behind him, and she is--a pillar of salt! And Abraham riseth early in the morning, unto the place where he hath stood before the face of Jehovah; (Genesis 19:24-27 YLT)
  • Fire is used to destroy “flesh” or sin nature. Like Lot’s wife.
  • And looking at God’s fire will kill us and turn us into a pillar of Salt. Christians are the salt of the earth. Christians are to be walking dead men. Pillars of Salt.
  • Preservatives and Pure and Holy. Making people thirsty.
9
Sodom and Gomorrah an Example of Eternal Fire for Us
  • as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, in like manner to these, having given themselves to whoredom, and gone after other flesh, have been set before--an example, of fire age-during, justice suffering. (Jude 1:7 YLT)
  • God says that if Sodom and Gomorrah had seen Jesus they would have repented. Because of this it will be more tolerable on the day of Judgment for them than for the religious elite who know better but don’t believe.
  • `And thou, Capernaum, which unto the heaven wast exalted, unto hades shalt be brought down, because if in Sodom had been done the mighty works that were done in thee, it had remained unto this day; but I say to you, to the land of Sodom it shall be more tolerable in a day of judgment than to thee.'
    (Matthew 11:23-24 YLT)
10
What Was Sodom’s Sin?
  • Lo, this hath been the iniquity of Sodom thy sister, Arrogancy, fulness of bread, and quiet ease, Have been to her and to her daughters, And the hand of the afflicted and needy She hath not strengthened. (Ezekiel 16:49 YLT)
  • Selfishness, Pride, Lack of Hospitality
11
Who Avoids the Lake of Fire?
  • And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given to them, and
  • the souls of those who have been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus, and because of the word of God,
  • and who did not bow before the beast, nor his image,
  • and did not receive the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand,
  • and they did live and reign with Christ the thousand years; and the rest of the dead did not live again till the thousand years may be finished; this is the first rising again. Happy and holy is he who is having part in the first rising again; over these the second death hath not authority, but they shall be priests of God and of the Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:4-6 YLT)
12
Sodom and First Resurrection
  • Sodom is our Example of the Judgement of Fire:
  • Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (Jude 1:7 KJVR)
  • But the Fire Went out when where was nothing left to burn and they will be restored anyway.
  • Eternal fire only burns until there is nothing left to burn according to the bible.
13
What is Fire in the Bible?
  • And the appearance of the honour of Jehovah is as a consuming fire on the top of the mount, before the eyes of the sons of Israel; (Exodus 24:17 YLT) (Pentecost-Sinai)
  • for also our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:29 YLT)
  • God is a fire. He burns everything that’s flammable. Flesh. Wood. Hay. Stubble. Etc…
  • The fire is God. And anything flammable that gets near him will be consumed.
14
Ministers a flame of fire
  • and unto the messengers, indeed, He saith, `Who is making His messengers spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire;' (Hebrews 1:7 YLT)
  • His ministers (us) are a flame of fire.
  • Why? Preaching God’s law makes us human flame throwers. Consuming the flesh of anyone we speak about God too.
15
Pentecost and Fire
  • On Pentecost there were tongues of fire above the heads of those speaking in tongues.
  • This was showing that God’s law was now going out to all nations not just flesh Israel.
  • It is also symbolic of God’s “fiery law” going out to the world to destroy the flesh. Or to baptize in fire.
  • And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them. (Deuteronomy 33:2 KJVR)
16
Pentecost at Mt. Sinai
  • When God gave the Torah on Sinai, He displayed untold marvels to Israel with His voice. What happened? God spoke and the Voice reverberated throughout the world. …It says, And all the people witnessed the thunderings (Exo. 18:15). Not that it does not say “the thunder,” but “the thunderings”; wherefore, R. Hohanan said that God’s voice, as it was uttered, split up into seventy voices, in seventy languages, so that ll the nations should understand. When each nation heard the voice in their own vernacular, their souls departed [they were in fear], save Israel, who heard but who were not hurt… Exodus Rabbah 5.9
17
Greek - Fire
  • G4442
  • πῦρ
  • pur
  • poor
  • A primary word; “fire” (literally or figuratively, specifically lightning): - fiery, fire.
  • Means to “pur”ify, “pur”ge,

18
Puree
  • Pur'ee
  • Pur'ee \Pu`r['e]e"\, n. [F.] A dish made by boiling any article of food to a pulp and rubbing it through a sieve; as, a pur['e]e of fish, or of potatoes; especially, a soup the thickening of which is so treated.
19
Lake of Fire Is…
  • The Lake of Fire or the Second Death is Gods presence, knowledge, or law and any vessels which contain that fire including believers in Christ by the transitive property of algebra. If a = b and b = c then a = c.
  • So in the Presence of God the flesh nature is destroyed or refined until only the Spirit or God nature  is left.
  • If you don’t believe me talk to Christians who sin and don’t repent and looked at how miserable their lives are.
20
Body of Christ
  • The body of Christ, technically speaking, is a lake of fire.
  • We are a body of fire like a lake is a body of water.
  • And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. (Revelation 1:15 KJVR)
  • And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. (Revelation 17:15 KJVR)
21
Many Waters
  • So Jesus speaks through many nations, tongues, and people’s.
  • That’s why his voice is as “many waters”
  • And his ministers are as “flames of fire”.
  • That’s us.
22
Baptism of Fire
  • I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be finished!
    (Luke 12:49-50 KJVR)
  • When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (John 19:30 KJVR)
  • Jesus gives us a clue that the baptism of fire, lake of fire, and second death are all exactly the same thing. Putting the flesh nature to death.
  • The second death is the cross. So King James readers can properly say, “The Cross is Hell”
  • The cross is the altar and the wood.
23
So What’s the First Death Then
  • Now that we know that the Second Death is the destruction of the “flesh nature” by “fire”.
  • Let’s see if we can figure out using the bible what is the “First Death?”
  • The “first death” mentioned in the bible is easy – it’s Adam sinning. Jesus is the “Second Adam” and corresponds to the second death.
  • for even as in Adam all die, so also in the Christ all shall be made alive, and each in his proper order, a first-fruit Christ, afterwards those who are the Christ's, in his presence, (1 Corinthians 15:22-23 YLT)
24
When Adam Sinned He Died
  • and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it--dying thou dost die.' (Genesis 2:17 YLT)
  • God told Adam that the day he “ate” the fruit from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil he would die. Adam did eat and did die, spiritually, not in the flesh. He lived to be 960 years old. (although 1000 years is as a day too)
  • But something happened that literal day because he was ashamed and afraid which wasn’t the case before sinning.
  • So spiritual death is the first death.
25
Another clue – The Two Trees in the Midst of the Garden
  • Knowledge of Good and Evil – Adam ate and died spiritually but lived in the Flesh. Because his body kept living. And all descendants of Adam are born dead too because we inherit this from our father Adam.
  • The Tree of Life – The second Adam (Jesus) died on the “Tree of Life” (the cross). He died on it in the flesh but became alive in the Spirit and with a new Body. His death on the cross is “The Second Death”.
  • The Second Death is the death of the “flesh” or “Adamic” sin nature.
  • Jesus’ resurrection is “The First Resurrection” Or being born of the Spirit. Or undoing Adam’s Death.
26
So the First Death Is
  • Like Adam’s death -- the first death is spiritual death only. Adam died in the flesh when he was 960 years old.
  • We need to let the bible define what death is. Adam’s death was caused by eating from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. (The symptom of this death is doing what you want instead of what God says)
  • The Second death is Jesus’ crucifixion. The cross. The correct definition is the opposite of what Adam did. (Doing what God says instead of what you want) or The destruction of the flesh. This represents the “Tree of Life” in the garden of Eden.
  • The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is a symbol for living according to the desires of the flesh.
  • The Tree of Life represents living according to the Holy Spirit or God’s will.
  • Does the bible harmonize with this?
  • You Bet it does!
27
Flesh Dying is the Second Death
  • Every day do I die, by the glorying of you that I have in Christ Jesus our Lord:
    (1 Corinthians 15:31 YLT)
  • that the proof of your faith--much more precious than of gold that is perishing, and through fire being approved--may be found to praise, and honour, and glory, in the revelation of Jesus Christ,
    (1 Peter 1:7 YLT)
28
More Dying by Fire
  • Beloved, think it not strange at the fiery suffering among you that is coming to try you, as if a strange thing were happening to you, but, according as ye have fellowship with the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice ye, that also in the revelation of his glory ye may rejoice--exulting;
    (1 Peter 4:12-13 YLT)
29
More Dying By Fire
  • Also you--being dead in the trespasses and the sins, in which once ye did walk according to the age of this world, according to the ruler of the authority of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all did walk once in the desires of our flesh, doing the wishes of the flesh and of the thoughts, and were by nature children of wrath -- as also the others, and God, being rich in kindness, because of His great love with which He loved us, even being dead in the trespasses, did make us to live together with the Christ, (by grace ye are having been saved,) and did raise us up together, and did seat us together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
  • (Ephesians 2:1-6 YLT)

30
And More…
  • being buried with him in the baptism, in which also ye rose with him through the faith of the working of God, who did raise him out of the dead. And you--being dead in the trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh--He made alive together with him, having forgiven you all the trespasses, having blotted out the handwriting in the ordinances that is against us, that was contrary to us, and he hath taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross;
    (Colossians 2:12-14 YLT)
31
And More…
  • and if Christ is in you, the body, indeed, is dead because of sin, and the Spirit is life because of righteousness, (Romans 8:10 YLT)
  • and those who are Christ's, the flesh did crucify with the affections, and the desires;
    (Galatians 5:24 YLT)
  • it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body; there is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body; so also it hath been written, `The first man Adam became a living creature,' the last Adam is for a life-giving spirit,
    (1 Corinthians 15:44-45 YLT)
32
Why the Cross is called a Tree? It all makes sense now!
  • who our sins himself did bear in his body, upon the tree, that to the sins having died, to the righteousness we may live; by whose stripes ye were healed, (1 Peter 2:24 YLT)
  • The bible refers back to the “Tree” to take us back to the beginning to the Garden of Eden.
  • And as an aside, for some reason Jehovah’s Witnesses use the “tree” reference to prove Jesus died on a “tree” not a “cross” and that all Christians are wrong. This is just human pride though because the bible uses both tree and cross and even if it didn’t who cares what shape the stick was? Duhhhh.
33
We are to Die to Sin…
  • What, then, shall we say? shall we continue in the sin that the grace may abound? let it not be! we who died to the sin--how shall we still live in it? are ye ignorant that we, as many as were baptized to Christ Jesus, to his death were baptized? we were buried together, then, with him through the baptism to the death, that even as Christ was raised up out of the dead through the glory of the Father, so also we in newness of life might walk. For, if we have become planted together to the likeness of his death, so also we shall be of the rising again; this knowing, that our old man was crucified with him , that the body of the sin may be made useless, for our no longer serving the sin; for he who hath died hath been set free from the sin. And if we died with Christ, we believe that we also shall live with him, knowing that Christ, having been raised up out of the dead, doth no more die, death over him hath no more lordship; for in that he died, to the sin he died once, and in that he liveth, he liveth to God; so also ye, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to the sin, and living to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.
    (Romans 6:1-11 YLT)
34
Nick at Night…
  • And there was a man of the Pharisees, Nicodemus his name, a ruler of the Jews, this one came unto him by night, and said to him, `Rabbi, we have known that from God thou hast come--a teacher, for no one these signs is able to do that thou dost, if God may not be with him.' Jesus answered and said to him, `Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born from above, he is not able to see the reign of God;' Nicodemus saith unto him, `How is a man able to be born, being old? is he able into the womb of his mother a second time to enter, and to be born?' Jesus answered, `Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born of water, and the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the reign of God; that which hath been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which hath been born of the Spirit is spirit. `Thou mayest not wonder that I said to thee, It behoveth you to be born from above; the Spirit where he willeth doth blow, and his voice thou dost hear, but thou hast not known whence he cometh, and whither he goeth; thus is every one who hath been born of the Spirit.' Nicodemus answered and said to him, `How are these things able to happen?' Jesus answered and said to him, `Thou art the teacher of Israel--and these things thou dost not know! `Verily, verily, I say to thee--What we have known we speak, and what we have seen we testify, and our testimony ye do not receive; if the earthly things I said to you, and ye do not believe, how, if I shall say to you the heavenly things, will ye believe?
    (John 3:1-12 YLT)
35
Over comers vs. Lake of Fire
  • he who is overcoming shall inherit all things, and I will be to him--a God, and he shall be to me--the son, and to fearful, and unstedfast, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all the liars, their part is in the lake that is burning with fire and brimstone, which is a second death.' (Revelation 21:7-8 YLT)
36
First Death vs. Second Death
  • So the First Death is Spiritual. We’re born spiritually dead.
  • The Second Death is the death of the Sin or Flesh Nature. This happens over the course of our lifetime by suffering as we die slowly and painfully on our own crosses.
  • First death is death to Godliness.
  • Second death is death to Sinfulness.
37
The First Resurrection
  • If the First Death is Spiritual then the First Resurrection is Spiritual.
  • This is when we are “born from above”. And born into the Israel of God.
  • (Acts 26:23 KJVR)  That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
  • …This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6 KJVR)
38
He Who Overcomes
  • He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. (Revelation 2:11 KJVR)
  • Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6 KJVR)
  • And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (Revelation 20:14 KJVR)
  • But the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8 KJVR)
39
Jesus Overcame The World
  • These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
    (John 16:33 KJVA)
  • I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
  • (1 John 2:13-14 KJVR)

40
Faith is the Key to being an “Overcomer”
  • because every one who is begotten of God doth overcome the world, and this is the victory that did overcome the world--our faith; who is he who is overcoming the world, if not he who is believing that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4-5 YLT)

41
The Tree of Life
  • He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. (Revelation 2:7 KJVR)
  • He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
  • (Revelation 2:11 KJVR)

42
More Overcoming
  • He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. (Revelation 2:17 KJVR)
  • And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: (Revelation 2:26 KJVA)
  • This is the upward call of God. To rule and reign with Christ. Not all Christians will get this privilege.
43
More Overcoming
  • He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. (Revelation 3:5 KJVR)
  • Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. (Revelation 3:12 KJVA)

44
More Overcoming
  • To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. (Revelation 3:21 KJVR)
  • And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
  • (Revelation 11:7 KJVR)

45
More Overcoming
  • And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. (Revelation 12:11 KJVR)
  • And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
    (Revelation 13:7 KJVR)

46
More Overcoming
  • And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.
    (Revelation 15:2 KJVR)
  • First the natural then the spiritual. Sea of glass is fire applied to the sea of humanity. Burned sand becomes glass after heat applied to it.

47
Finally
  • He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (Revelation 21:7 KJVR)
  • The First Death is Adam’s Spiritual Death
  • The First Resurrection is when we’re born of the Spirit by faith in Jesus through water baptism. (see Nick at Night slide)
  • The Second Death is the lake of Fire or Baptism of Fire or the Cross. We die daily until our sin nature is completely purged.
  • So then the Second Resurrection must be…

48
Second Resurrection
  • The second resurrection must be the resurrection of our bodies like Jesus on the 3rd day.
  • The second resurrection is the transformation of our bodies from mortal to immortality.
  • Some Christians won’t ever have to die because they will be transformed in the twinkling of an eye.
49
The End (New Beginning)
  • Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
  • (1 Corinthians 15:51-54 KJVR)

50
Blessed and Holy is He
  • Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
    (Revelation 20:6 KJVR)
  • So anyone who puts their faith in Christ and is led by the Spirit instead of their flesh or sin nature will not be hurt by the second death and will rule and reign with Christ. This is what the bible says.
  • So we must strive to be led by the Spirit and not our flesh nature or else we may miss out on the greatest career advancement ever to rule and reign with Christ during the millennium.
